Ice Floes and Frost

About This Issue

To celebrate the winter season and encourage young people to dive into a good book, Library and Archives Canada presents Ice Floes and Frost. This selective bibliography presents books for young people on climate change in the Polar Regions. Ice Floes and Frost describes the variety and richness of children's books and provides an overview of our country's northern climate through the representation of cold and wintry weather. It is remarkable to see such an increase in noteworthy and high-quality non-fiction titles for young people.

Read Up On It, a publication of Library and Archives Canada, presents a selection of Canadian books for young people from its collection. These books are intended for beginning readers to teenagers. Furthermore, this selection of books offers a range ideal for parents, volunteers and educators who are reading to toddlers in childcare centres or in family daycares.

Read Up On It is the tool of choice for the enrichment and development of school and public libraries as well as family and community literacy because it allows you to discover quality books that can be shared between generations. The objectives of Read Up On It are to make Canadian authors and illustrators known, to encourage reading Canadian children's books and to raise awareness of the children's literature collection at Library and Archives Canada.

Read Up On It is sent to nearly 18,000 teachers, librarians, educators and parents who nurture the love of reading in young people. I hope all readers will discover the books that fascinate and inspire them in preparing for a school project or for personal interest. Ideas for activities will allow the books to be used in fun and informative projects. Teachers and librarians can invite an author, an illustrator or an environmental specialist to share their knowledge on climate change, winter and the North with young readers.
