Scope and content

Fonds consists of photographs documenting the specific places and individuals involved in the trial of Louis Riel, 1885-1886. Depicted are: group portraits of the main jurors, witnesses, prisoners of the Rebellion, and officials of the trial; North West Mounted Police barracks, Regina, Saskatchewan, 1885; Port Arthur, Ontario; Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. Photos by Oliver Buell. Also included are several photographs documenting the activities of First Nations peoples, settlers, and early towns in Western Canada. Photographs by C.S. Bailey; William Notman; R. Ewing; and R. W. Anderson. The photographs were amassed by Christopher Robinson, one of the prosecuting Crown attorneys in the trial of Louis Riel.

Biography / Administrative history

Christopher Blackett Robinson was born in Thorah, Upper Canada, in 1837. After editing and publishing the BEAVERTON POST, he moved to Toronto where he published the CANADA PRESBYTERIAN. In 1883 he co-founded a new journal entitled THE WEEK with Goldwin Smith, which took up the work of the defunct CANADIAN MONTHLY. Until it ceased publication in 1896, THE WEEK was the main vehicle for the work of the Confederation poets and essayists of the period. Robinson died in Ottawa in 1923.

Additional information

The photographs were amassed by Christopher Robinson, one of the prosecuting Crown attorneys in the trial of Louis Riel. The photographs were passed down by family descent to Gilbert Bagnani of Port Hope, Ontario, who donated them to the National Archives 6 September 1977.

Associated material note
The "Vogrie" property, Ontario homestead to the Bagnani family, was inherited by Trent University after the death of Gilbert Bagnani in 1985. Antiquities, art works, furniture, books and documents were bequeathed to a number of institutions, including Trent University, after the deaths of Gilbert and Mary Stewart Bagnani.
