Detailed Description

Red River census
1834

Lord Selkirk's land grant was called Assiniboia and was administered by a governor and council  -  all of whom had connections with the Hudson's Bay Company  -  until 1869 when the Red River Rebellion ended the arrangement. In an effort to assist the council in its administrative duties, regular census returns of the settlement were compiled. In this 1834 return, the heads of families are listed, with their age, place of origin, and religion, along with a count of family members, property and livestock.
